Project Overview
Develop an AWS CloudFormation template to automate the deployment of a static website on Amazon S3, configured with a custom domain registered with Route 53 and accelerated using AWS CloudFront for improved performance and global reach.
Technologies and Services Used
AWS: CloudFront, S3, EC2, CloudWatch, Route 53
Web Performance: Caching, SSL/TLS, CDN, Content Optimization
Security: HTTPS, SSL/TLS, IAM, S3 Bucket Policies

Key Responsibilities:
CloudFormation Template Development: - Infrastructure as Code: Designed and developed an AWS CloudFormation template to automate the deployment of the static website hosting environment, including S3, CloudFront, and Route 53 configurations. - S3 Bucket Setup: Configured an S3 bucket to host the static website, enabling static website hosting features, and applied appropriate bucket policies to control public access while ensuring security. - CloudFront Distribution Configuration: Created and configured an AWS CloudFront distribution with the S3 bucket as the origin, enabling global content delivery with lower latency and improved performance.
Custom Domain Integration: - Route 53 Domain Registration: Registered and managed a custom domain using Amazon Route 53, setting up DNS records to route traffic through CloudFront to the S3 bucket. - SSL/TLS Integration: Provisioned SSL/TLS certificates using AWS Certificate Manager (ACM) to secure the website with HTTPS, integrating the certificate with CloudFront for secure content delivery.
Template Features: - Parameterization: Included parameters in the CloudFormation template to allow customization, such as domain name input, S3 bucket name, and CloudFront configurations, making the template flexible for different environments. - Outputs and Documentation: Configured outputs in the template to display essential information, including the CloudFront distribution domain name, website URL, and Route 53 DNS settings. Provided detailed documentation on how to use and deploy the template.
Performance and Security Optimization: - Content Delivery Optimization: Leveraged CloudFront’s global edge locations to reduce latency and deliver content faster to users worldwide. Configured caching behaviors to optimize content delivery based on the website's needs. - Security Best Practices: Applied security best practices by enforcing HTTPS for all traffic, restricting direct access to the S3 bucket, and ensuring the proper configuration of CloudFront security settings.
Testing & Validation: - Deployment Testing: Performed multiple deployments using the CloudFormation template to ensure that all components (S3, CloudFront, Route 53) were correctly provisioned and configured. - Performance Testing: Validated that the website was accessible globally with improved load times and confirmed that SSL/TLS encryption was functioning as expected.
Project Outcomes
Successfully created an AWS CloudFormation template that automated the deployment of a static website hosted on S3, accelerated by CloudFront, and secured with a custom domain via Route 53. The implementation provided a repeatable, scalable, and high-performance solution for hosting static websites with enhanced global accessibility and security.
