Connecting Two AWS VPCs via VPC Peering for Private Communication

Project Overview

Establish a secure and reliable connection between an AWS Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) and an on-premises private network using AWS Site-to-Site VPN to enable seamless communication and resource sharing.

Technologies and Services Used

  • AWS: VPC, Site-to-Site VPN, Virtual Private Gateway, CloudWatch, IAM

  • Networking: IPsec VPN, Routing, Subnetting, Firewalls

  • Security: Encryption, Security Groups

Key Responsibilities:

  • VPC Design and Configuration: Designed and configured two separate AWS VPCs, each with its own subnets, route tables, and security groups, ensuring that both VPCs were prepared for peering and could communicate privately.

  • VPC Peering Setup:

- Peering Connection Establishment: Established a VPC peering connection between the two VPCs, ensuring that the peering request was accepted and configured correctly.

- Route Table Updates: Updated route tables in both VPCs to allow traffic to route between them using local IP addresses, ensuring that resources in each VPC could communicate privately without traversing the public internet. - DNS Resolution: Enabled DNS resolution across the peered VPCs, allowing resources to resolve each other’s DNS names using private IP addresses.

  • Security Configuration:

- Security Group Adjustments: Modified security group rules to allow traffic from the peered VPC’s IP range, ensuring secure and controlled access between resources in both VPCs. - Network Access Control Lists (NACLs): Reviewed and adjusted NACLs to support traffic between the VPCs while maintaining a high level of security.

  • Testing & Validation: Conducted comprehensive testing to validate the peering connection, including verifying that instances in each VPC could communicate using their local IPs without any latency or security issues.

  • Documentation and Handover: Documented the entire setup process, including configurations, security measures, and troubleshooting steps, and provided the client with clear guidance on managing the peered VPCs.

Project Outcomes

Successfully connected two AWS VPCs via VPC peering, allowing the client to achieve seamless and secure communication between resources in both VPCs using local IP addresses. The solution was delivered on time and met all client requirements for performance and security.
