Deployment of a Three-Tier Application on Azure Platform

Project Overview

This project involved deploying a three-tier web application on the Azure cloud platform, encompassing a web tier, application tier, and database tier. The web tier handled client requests, the application tier processed business logic, and the database tier stored and managed data. The entire infrastructure was automated using Terraform, while PowerShell and Python scripts were employed for various configurations. The application was containerized using Docker and orchestrated with Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), while Azure DevOps enabled CI/CD. Azure SQL served as the backend database.

Technologies and Services Used

  • Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS): For orchestrating the application tier's containerized microservices.

  • Azure App Service (Web Tier): Hosted the web tier of the application for handling HTTP requests and static content.

  • Terraform: Automated the provisioning of Azure infrastructure.

  • PowerShell & Python: For scripting and automation tasks across the environment.

  • Docker: Containerized the web and application tiers for consistent and scalable deployments.

  • Azure SQL: Managed database service for storing and managing application data.

  • Azure DevOps: Enabled CI/CD pipelines for continuous integration and deployment.

  • Architecture Design and Implementation: Designed a robust three-tier architecture on Azure that included a web tier (Azure App Service), application tier (AKS), and database tier (Azure SQL), ensuring scalability, security, and high availability.

  • Web Tier Setup on Azure App Service: Deployed the web tier on Azure App Service, hosting static content and handling incoming HTTP traffic with built-in scaling and load balancing.

  • Container Orchestration with AKS: Deployed containerized services in the application tier using AKS for seamless scaling and management of microservices.

  • Infrastructure Automation with Terraform: Automated the provisioning of the entire Azure infrastructure, including Azure App Service, AKS, and Azure SQL, using Terraform for repeatable and consistent deployments.

  • CI/CD Pipeline with Azure DevOps: Configured Azure DevOps pipelines to automate application builds, tests, and deployments for both the web and application tiers.

  • Database Management with Azure SQL: Managed and configured Azure SQL for the backend, ensuring secure, scalable, and high-performance data management.

  • Scripting with PowerShell and Python: Developed PowerShell and Python scripts for automating configurations and backend processes.

  • Network Security and Configuration: Set up and managed Azure Virtual Network (VNet) to ensure secure communication between the web, application, and database tiers.
