Ongoing Project: Migrating Multi-Account AWS Infrastructure to Terraform Module Architecture

Project Overview

I am currently working on managing a large-scale AWS infrastructure across multiple accounts, each using similar services. The original Terraform codebase became complex due to duplicated code for each service across accounts. To streamline this, I am migrating the infrastructure to a Terraform module architecture. By creating reusable Terraform modules for AWS services, I aim to simplify deployments, reduce redundancy, and enhance maintainability across all AWS environments.

Technologies and Services Used

  • Terraform: Infrastructure as code for managing and automating AWS services.

  • AWS Services: Including EC2, S3, RDS, VPC, IAM, and others across multiple AWS accounts.

  • Terraform Modules: Developing reusable modules to standardize and simplify service deployments.

  • AWS Organizations: For governance and management of multiple AWS accounts.

  • CI/CD Pipelines: Automating the application of Terraform modules across environments.

  • Git: Version control to track changes in Terraform modules and configurations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Terraform Module Development: Developing and refining Terraform modules for various AWS services, including EC2, S3, VPC, and RDS, ensuring efficient and consistent deployments.

  • Service-by-Service Migration: Migrating each service from the existing Terraform codebase to the new module-based architecture. This involves analyzing current infrastructure, creating corresponding modules, and deploying them incrementally to ensure smooth transitions.

  • Multi-Account Management: Ensuring consistent infrastructure deployment and management across multiple AWS accounts using the newly created modules.

  • Code Optimization and Refactoring: Continuously refactoring the Terraform codebase to simplify deployments, reduce redundancy, and adhere to best practices for infrastructure as code.

  • Automation with CI/CD: Implementing CI/CD pipelines to automatically deploy the new Terraform modules across the AWS accounts, ensuring smooth, repeatable deployments.

  • Testing and Validation: Carefully testing and validating each service migration to ensure the new modules deploy successfully and function as expected in production.

  • Documentation and Collaboration: Collaborating with the team to document the migration process and ensure that the modules are well-documented for future scalability.

Project Outcomes (Ongoing):

  • Progressive Service Migration: Migrating AWS services to a module architecture one at a time, beginning with core services like EC2, S3, and VPC. Each migration reduces the complexity of the Terraform codebase.

  • Infrastructure Consistency: The module-based approach ensures that services are deployed consistently across AWS accounts, reducing manual errors and configuration drift.

  • Simplified Codebase: The ongoing migration has led to a more manageable and maintainable Terraform codebase, with less duplication and complexity.

  • Reusable Terraform Modules: The modules created are reusable across different AWS accounts, allowing for faster deployment and easier onboarding of new services.

  • Streamlined Deployment Process: The CI/CD pipelines ensure that infrastructure changes are applied reliably and consistently, with minimal manual intervention.

  • Future-Ready Infrastructure: As services are gradually migrated, the infrastructure becomes easier to manage and scale, laying a solid foundation for future updates and expansions.
