Project Overview
In this project, I developed Packer image templates to automate the creation of machine images for both AWS and Azure environments. The images were built for Ubuntu, CentOS, and Windows operating systems to streamline the deployment process across 5 EC2 instances running on AWS and 2 VMs running on Azure. Each image was customized based on the specific requirements of the services and applications deployed on these machines, ensuring consistency and efficiency in server provisioning.
Technologies and Services Used
Packer: For automating the creation of machine images for AWS EC2 instances and Azure VMs.
Amazon EC2: 5 EC2 instances running custom-built images on AWS.
Azure VMs: 2 Virtual Machines running on Azure, deployed using Packer images.
Ubuntu, CentOS, Windows: Operating systems for which Packer images were created, tailored to the environment requirements.
AWS AMIs (Amazon Machine Images): Custom AMIs were created for deployment on AWS.
Azure Managed Images: Custom managed images for deployment on Azure VMs.
Key Responsibilities:
Packer File Development: Created and maintained Packer template files for building images for Ubuntu, CentOS, and Windows operating systems, each customized to match service-specific requirements.
Cross-Cloud Image Creation: Developed Packer scripts to generate AMIs for AWS EC2 instances and managed images for Azure VMs, ensuring compatibility across both platforms.
Automation of Image Builds: Automated the image build and deployment process using Packer, reducing the time and manual effort needed to provision new machines.
Customization of Images: Installed necessary software, security patches, and configurations tailored to each image, including service-specific needs for different operating systems.
Testing and Validation: Tested and validated the created images to ensure they met performance, security, and functional requirements before deployment.
EC2 and Azure VM Deployment: Deployed the created images on AWS EC2 instances and Azure VMs, ensuring successful integration with existing infrastructure.
Project Outcomes
Automated Image Creation: Reduced manual intervention by automating the image creation process for both AWS and Azure, ensuring consistent environments across platforms.
Cross-Platform Compatibility: Successfully created images for both AWS EC2 and Azure VMs, allowing for flexibility in deploying across different cloud providers.
Improved Efficiency: The use of Packer significantly improved provisioning time, reducing the effort needed to maintain and deploy new instances.
Consistency Across Environments: Ensured uniform configurations and software installations across all instances, improving security and performance management.
Scalable Image Management: Implemented a scalable solution that allowed easy updates and management of images for both operating systems and cloud environments.
