Deployed WordPress on AWS EC2 and Used RDS as Database

In this project, I successfully set up a WordPress website on an Amazon EC2 instance and connected it to an Amazon RDS database. This involved creating and configuring the necessary AWS infrastructure, deploying WordPress, and ensuring a secure and reliable environment.

Project Objectives

To deploy a reliable WordPress site using AWS services.

To separate the web server and database server for better performance and security.

To leverage AWS managed services to reduce operational overhead and ensure high availability

Technologies and Services Used

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS): EC2, RDS, S3, VPC, IAM, CloudWatch

  • WordPress: Open-source content management system

  • MySQL: Database engine hosted on RDS

  • Linux: Amazon Linux 2 for the EC2 instance

  • Apache: Web server to host WordPress

  • PHP: Server-side scripting for WordPress

  • Security: Security Groups, IAM roles, and policies

Achievements

  • Infrastructure Setup: Provisioned and configured an EC2 instance with necessary security groups, ensuring secure SSH access and HTTP/HTTPS traffic.

  • Database Configuration: Launched an RDS MySQL instance, set up parameter groups, and configured security groups for secure database access.

  • WordPress Deployment: Installed and configured WordPress on the EC2 instance, connected it to the RDS MySQL database.

  • Backup and Recovery: Configured automated backups for the RDS instance and regular snapshots of the EC2 instance for disaster recovery.

  • Monitoring: Set up CloudWatch for monitoring resource usage and performance.

Project Outcomes

  • High Availability: Achieved high availability and reliability by separating the web server and database server, ensuring minimal downtime.

  • Performance Optimization: Improved website performance with optimized EC2 and RDS configurations.

  • Security: Enhanced security using AWS security best practices, including least privilege IAM roles, security groups, and data encryption.

  • Operational Efficiency: Reduced operational overhead by leveraging managed services, allowing focus on application development and content management.
