AWS WAF Security Automations with CloudFormation for Bancolombia Bank

Project Overview

As part of the AWS Security project for Bancolombia Bank, I implemented AWS WAF (Web Application Firewall) security automations using CloudFormation templates. This project focused on protecting Bancolombia’s web applications from common web-based threats such as SQL injection, cross-site scripting (XSS), and DDoS attacks. Using AWS WAF, we automatically deployed a set of predefined security rules and customized protections to secure the bank's digital assets. The automation ensures that the security framework is scalable and consistent across multiple environments.

Security Automations Overview:

Security Automations for AWS WAF automatically deploys a set of AWS WAF rules designed to filter common web-based attacks. These rules are managed within an AWS WAF Web Access Control List (ACL) that protects web applications. Users can select from preconfigured protective features that define the rules included in the WAF ACL. Once deployed, AWS WAF automatically protects Amazon CloudFront distributions, providing a robust layer of security for content delivery.

Technologies and Services Used

  • AWS WAF (Web Application Firewall): To protect Bancolombia’s web applications from common vulnerabilities and attacks.

  • AWS CloudFormation: Automated the deployment of security infrastructure, ensuring consistency across environments.

  • AWS Shield: Integrated with AWS WAF for enhanced protection against DDoS attacks.

  • AWS Lambda: Automated response actions for security incidents and applied custom logic to manage and update WAF rules.

  • Amazon CloudFront: Used to distribute content securely, protected by AWS WAF.

  • Amazon S3: For logging and storing detailed WAF request data for analysis and audits.

Key Responsibilities:

  • AWS WAF Implementation: Deployed AWS WAF to filter and block malicious requests targeting Bancolombia’s web applications, with rules designed to address the OWASP Top 10 vulnerabilities.

  • Security Automation Configuration: Configured Security Automations for AWS WAF, deploying preconfigured rule sets that protect against SQL injection, cross-site scripting (XSS), and other common attacks.

  • CloudFront Integration: Configured AWS WAF to automatically protect Amazon CloudFront distributions, ensuring secure content delivery with web-based threat filtering.

  • Automation with CloudFormation: Created CloudFormation templates to automate the deployment and configuration of AWS WAF, reducing manual effort and ensuring consistency across environments.

  • DDoS Protection: Integrated AWS WAF with AWS Shield to provide additional protection against DDoS attacks, enhancing the security posture of the bank’s web assets.

  • Incident Response Automation: Leveraged AWS Lambda functions to dynamically update WAF rules based on traffic analysis and security alerts.

  • Logging and Auditing: Configured logging for WAF rule evaluations and attacks, sending logs to S3 for storage and further analysis to identify trends and improve security over time.

Project Outcomes

  • Enhanced Web Security: Successfully mitigated security risks for Bancolombia Bank’s web applications by implementing AWS WAF, providing protection against common web threats.

  • Automated Security Framework: Delivered a fully automated security solution using CloudFormation, enabling repeatable and scalable deployments of WAF rules and security configurations.

  • Protection of CloudFront Distributions: AWS WAF rules automatically protected Amazon CloudFront distributions, ensuring secure delivery of web content with minimal latency.

  • Improved DDoS Resilience: Integrated AWS Shield to safeguard against DDoS attacks, ensuring availability and minimizing downtime.

  • Cost Efficiency and Scalability: Automation reduced operational overhead and allowed the security infrastructure to scale as needed.

  • Real-time Protection and Monitoring: Implemented real-time protection with continuous monitoring and automated responses to potential threats, ensuring a proactive security posture.
