Deployment of a Multi-Service Application on AWS ECS with CI\/CD Integration

Project Overview

Design and deploy a multi-service application on AWS, utilizing ECS for backend services, S3 for frontend hosting, and a fully AWS-based CI/CD pipeline for efficient development and deployment processes.

Technologies and Services Used

  • AWS: ECS, S3, Application Load Balancer (ALB), DocumentDB, CloudWatch, CodeCommit, CodeBuild, CodeDeploy, CodePipeline, CloudTrail

  • Infrastructure as Code: Terraform

  • Programming Languages: Node.js, Shell Scripting

  • Deployment: Docker, Automated Deployment Scripts

Key Responsibilities:

  • Infrastructure Deployment with Terraform: - Terraform Configuration: Played a key role as a Cloud and DevOps engineer in deploying the application’s infrastructure using Terraform. Defined infrastructure as code to automate the creation and management of AWS resources, ensuring a repeatable and scalable deployment process. - Resource Provisioning: Used Terraform to provision AWS ECS clusters for backend services, S3 buckets for frontend application hosting, DocumentDB for the database, and all associated networking components such as VPCs, subnets, security groups, and Application Load Balancers (ALB).

  • Multi-Service Application Deployment: - Backend Services on ECS: Deployed multiple backend services, each running in Docker containers managed by AWS ECS (Elastic Container Service). Configured ECS tasks and services to ensure proper scaling, high availability, and integration with the Application Load Balancer (ALB) for traffic distribution. - Frontend Application on S3: Hosted the frontend application on an S3 bucket, configured for static website hosting, and integrated with CloudFront for enhanced performance and security. - Application Load Balancer: Configured an Application Load Balancer to manage and route traffic to the appropriate backend services running on ECS, ensuring load distribution and reliability across the services.

  • CI/CD Pipeline Implementation: - AWS CodeCommit for Source Control: Set up AWS CodeCommit to host the application’s source code, enabling secure and scalable version control fully integrated with other AWS services. - AWS CodeBuild for Automated Builds: Configured AWS CodeBuild to automatically build Docker images for the backend services upon each code commit. Integrated CodeBuild with CodeCommit to trigger builds seamlessly. - AWS CodeDeploy for Automated Deployment: Integrated AWS CodeDeploy into the CI/CD pipeline to automate the deployment of backend services on ECS, ensuring zero-downtime deployments and easy rollbacks if necessary. - AWS CodePipeline for CI/CD Orchestration: Set up AWS CodePipeline to orchestrate the entire CI/CD process, linking CodeCommit, CodeBuild, and CodeDeploy to provide a fully automated pipeline from code commit to production deployment.

  • Database Management: - DocumentDB Setup: Deployed and managed the application’s database using Amazon DocumentDB, ensuring high availability, scalability, and seamless integration with the backend services running on ECS. - Security and Performance Optimization: Configured DocumentDB with appropriate security groups, backups, and monitoring to maintain data integrity and performance.

  • Monitoring and Management: - CloudWatch Monitoring: Implemented monitoring and alerting using Amazon CloudWatch to track the health and performance of ECS services, DocumentDB, and the overall application infrastructure. - Logging and Troubleshooting: Integrated AWS CloudTrail and CloudWatch Logs to capture detailed logs and audit trails for security, compliance, and troubleshooting purposes.

  • Testing and Validation: - Infrastructure Testing: Conducted thorough testing of the Terraform scripts to ensure that the infrastructure was deployed correctly and could handle the expected load. - CI/CD Pipeline Testing: Validated the AWS-based CI/CD pipeline to ensure that code changes were automatically tested and deployed without manual intervention, reducing deployment time and errors.

Project Outcomes

Successfully deployed a multi-service application on AWS, leveraging ECS for backend services and S3 for frontend hosting. The use of Terraform for infrastructure as code ensured a scalable and repeatable deployment process, while the integration of AWS CodeCommit, CodeBuild, CodeDeploy, and CodePipeline streamlined the CI/CD process, enabling faster and more reliable deployments.
