Enhancing E-Commerce Website Performance with AWS CloudFront and S3 for Lower Latency

Project Overview

Improve the performance and user experience of an e-commerce website by reducing latency and accelerating content delivery using AWS CloudFront as a CDN, with static content served from Amazon S3 and dynamic content from an EC2 instance.

Technologies and Services Used

  • AWS: CloudFront, S3, EC2, CloudWatch, Route 53

  • Web Performance: Caching, SSL/TLS, CDN, Content Optimization

  • Security: HTTPS, SSL/TLS, IAM, S3 Bucket Policies

Key Responsibilities:

  • Requirement Analysis:Analyzed the existing website architecture to identify performance bottlenecks, particularly around high latency and slow content delivery. Determined the need for a CDN to optimize content delivery across different geographic regions and reduce server load.

  • AWS CloudFront and S3 Configuration:

- CloudFront Distribution Setup: Created and configured an AWS CloudFront distribution, with Amazon S3 as the origin for static content (e.g., images, CSS, JavaScript) and an EC2 instance as the origin for dynamic content. - Amazon S3 Setup: Uploaded static assets to Amazon S3 and configured appropriate bucket policies to enable public access through CloudFront while securing direct access to the S3 bucket. - Caching Strategy: Developed and implemented a caching strategy in CloudFront, specifying cache behaviors to optimize the delivery of static and dynamic content. - SSL/TLS Configuration: Enabled SSL/TLS encryption for secure HTTPS delivery via CloudFront, ensuring a secure connection for end-users. - Custom Domain Configuration: Configured custom domain names for CloudFront, updating DNS settings to route traffic appropriately through CloudFront for both static and dynamic content.

  • Performance Optimization:

- Content Optimization: Optimized static content stored in S3 by setting appropriate cache headers and enabling gzip compression for faster load times. - Geographical Performance Improvement: Utilized CloudFront’s global edge locations to serve cached content from the closest edge location to the user, significantly reducing latency.

  • Testing & Monitoring:

- Latency Testing: Conducted comprehensive testing before and after implementation to measure improvements in load times, focusing on both static and dynamic content delivery. - Monitoring Setup: Set up CloudFront and S3 monitoring through CloudWatch to track performance metrics, cache hit/miss ratios, and latency, ensuring ongoing optimization.

  • Documentation and Client Handover:Provided detailed documentation on the configuration and deployment process, including the CloudFront and S3 setup, caching strategies, and SSL/TLS configurations. Conducted a handover session to explain the benefits of the optimized architecture and guide the client on future maintenance and scaling.

Project Outcomes

Successfully implemented AWS CloudFront with Amazon S3 for static content and EC2 for dynamic content, leading to a significant reduction in latency and improved load times for the e-commerce website. The optimized architecture provided a better user experience, increased website responsiveness, and enhanced customer satisfaction.
